Discuss how you see the similarities and differences in the perception and treatment of Japanese Americans following the attack on Pearl Harbor, and of Muslim Americans following the attacks of September 11, 2001, and current events related to ISIS. How does the treatment of Japanese Americans then inform the way you think about Muslim Americans today?

When The Emperor Was DivinePART A:  Essays will be judged on use of textual evidence, originality of thought and clarity of prose.  The completed essay should contain no more than 750 words, double-spaced, using 12-point Times New Roman font, and including a heading that states the title of the essay, your name, and the best way to contact you.

PART B:  Author, Julie Otsuka will visit UD on Wednesday, September 21st.  Please submit a question for her, based on what you’ve read in her book.



First Place = $300   Second Place = $150    Third Place = $100   Fourth Place = $50

Essays and questions are due no later than Midnight on September 11, 2016.

Send material as an email attachment to:  FYE-Essay@udel.edu, and write “FYE Essay Contest” in the subject line.

To be considered for the awards, you must complete and submit both parts A and B above by the deadline.
